Action Plan for Higher Education Engagement Program of UBA in collaboration with C 20 - LiFE working group Civil-20 is one of the Engagement groups of the G20 process. The purpose of Civil20 (C20) is to bring together voices, ideas and solutions from civil societies across the Globe. The C20 group leverages the diverse spectrum of our society and is expected to channel the G20 process towards being inclusive, people-centric, democratic and better informed. For the past few years, Bharat has been highlighting ‘Lifestyleʼ as one of the issues requiring global discussion. Lifestyle for the Environment is one of the important discussion themes in all three tracks of the G20 process.  The C20 in Bharat has created 14 working groups covering various aspects that civil societies work on. LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) has been identified as one of the significant working groups.

About the Speaker: Prof. R. Shankar, a qualified architect and planner, was born and brought up in Kerala, did his graduation in Architecture in 1970 from College of Engineering Trivandrum and post graduation in Urban and Regional Planning in 1974 from School of Planning, CEPT‎ University, Ahmedabad. After a few years of professional work in the field of Architecture and Planning, he joined the University of Roorkee, later IIT Roorkee, as a faculty member in the Department of Architecture and Planning, where he became the Senior Professor and Head. In his long and accomplished academic career spanning four decades, Prof. Shankar taught and guided students of Architecture and Planning at undergraduate and post graduate levels. Urban & Architectural Design, Applied Ecology and Environmental Science, Landscape Architecture, Traditional Knowledge Systems and Sustainable Development are his favourite subjects for teaching and research work. He has guided more than a hundred B. Arch Thesis projects, 50 P.G Dissertation works and 6 Ph Ds and authored more than 90 research/ technical papers of which more than 50 have been published in refereed ‎journals. He has been an academic advisor and consultant to many architectural institutions. He has also been involved as a resource person and expert in the making of 17 audio visual programmes for the countrywide class room. His professional consultancy work includes the planning and design of PTCUL Headquarters complex at Dehradun, campus landscaping and preparation of Master Plans for Greater NOIDA extension and Gangotri, and Haridwar Ghat Development. Recently, he has completed his consultancy work on panning of pandemic resilient cities. He had been involved in the curriculum and faculty development of many architectural institutions and advisor/ technical consultant to Govt and other institutions. Prof. Shankar is an enthusiastic traveller, keen photographer and is interested in nature and spiritual studies.After retiring and leaving IIT Roorkee, Prof. R.Shankar is now settled in the village of Peeli Padav in the Haridwar district from where he continues his pursuits of teaching, guiding, mentoring, consultancy and community development works.
